PODCAST: Friend or Foe?: The Relative Appeal of the House of Saud vs. the Iranian Republic with Dr. Hall Gardner, Ep. 53

January 21, 2016: In part one of a two-part episode, The World Meets America Report spoke to Dr. Hall Gardner, Professor and Chair of International and Comparative Politics at The American University of Paris, about the way the United States has mishandled recent diplomatic openings with Iran, most recently following the September 11 attacks when Iran’s last reformist president, Mohammad Khatami, was shown the back of the George W. Bush Administration’s hand. Dr. Gardner finds nothing unusual about the way 10 U.S. sailors were treated when they fell into Iranian hands off Farsi Island, which is the site of an Iranian Revolutionary Guard military base. Dr. Gardner thinks Moscow will lose out thanks to the Iran nuclear deal because Tehran will now seek to buy nuclear reactors from Western countries like Germany rather than Russia, and over time, weapons systems as well. At the top of the program, William Kern also asks Dr. Gardner about his unexpected side vocation – poetry. Other items touched on are:

–The rebalancing of power between Iran and Saudi Arabia as a consequence of the Iran nuclear deal
–How the Saudi political system stacks up against the Iranian political system
–Whether America’s nearly unquestioned support for Saudi Arabia and against Iran makes any sense in today’s world
–Whether Saudi funding of terrorism really is from “private sources”
–The Danger of a Saudi Arabia’s disintegration
–China’s involvement in mediating the Iran-Saudi dispute
–The possibility of Chinese boots on the ground in Syria
